The Mexican Government's Secretary for the Environment and Natural Resources confirmed, last week, that they are evaluating two new real estate projects in the Riviera Maya, said local news service, Noticaribe.

In a report last Friday, the new agency said that public consultations would be held for Proyecto Punta Carey and Club Campestre y Golf Akumal.

Proyecto Punta Carey, is a 64.4 acre (26.05 hectare) resort development consisting of 30 apartments, over 100 hotel rooms, a club house and associated buildings and services in the middle of the Riviera Maya.

Club Campestre y Golf Akumal - or Akumal Golf and Country Club - is an ambitious project consisting of over 5,000 homes and a 36 hole golf course, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum on the Riviera Maya. It would be one of the largest Akumal real estate projects to date.

Environmentalists have expressed concern that both the Riviera Maya real estate projects may damage protected mangroves and sea turtle sanctuaries in the area and the proposals are also being examined by the government's authority for environmental impact and risk assessment.

Although there is no official definition of where the Riviera Maya begins and ends, it is commonly defined as the stretch between the tip of the Yucatan peninsula and Costa Maya which is about three hours down the coast from Cancun.

The highway down the coast has recently been expanded and now makes it easy to discover the area with all its special features. On both sides, the road is lined with fantastic eco-parks, classy restaurants and many little art shops as well as large venture points for carpets and jewelry.

A new international airport is also confirmed for the Riviera Maya in Tulum, which will make even more accessible and is expected to lead to an economic boom and further real estate developments in the area.

The Riviera Maya’s main features that make it attractive real estate are the ocean and its stunning beaches. They invite to relax under palm trees, water ski, jet ski, kite surf and parachute.

Not to be missed is the diving, both in the spectacular barrier reef, which is the second largest in the world, as well as in the famous cenotes in the jungle.

Whether on the seaside, in the city or in secluded tranquility, Riviera Maya real estate makes an excellent investment right now.  REMAX Investment Properties
